When the Season 19 cast of Dancing With the Stars was announced, many viewers were left scratching their heads. Many of the names listed were not familiar to mainstream audiences.
One of those names was YouTube star Bethany Mota. To the younger generation, she is one of the most popular personalities on the site. The video blogger began her channel in June 2009 by sharing her fashion hauls with her fans. Since then, she’s expanded to a fashion line at Aéropostale, her channel has grown to over 10 million subscribers and she’s in the October issue of Seventeen magazine.
Dancing With the Stars offers up eclectic cast for Season 19 >>
For an 18-year-old, that’s an impressive list of accomplishments. However, some diehard DWTS fans were upset that a YouTube personality was included on this season’s cast list. A few felt she didn’t warrant the title of “star.”
SheKnows took to Twitter to find out what the fans really felt about her presence on the show. Here’s what they had to say.
Some weren’t open to her appearing on the show at all because they felt that the dance competition show reaches an older demographic.
@KristynBurtt @SheKnows_Ent she doesn't feel like a "star" to me.1) I didn't know her at all.2) The range she reaches doesn't watch the show

@KristynBurtt @SheKnows_Ent 3) I don't believe a you tube celebrity should be considered a star unless they have been on numerous tv shows.

@KristynBurtt @SheKnows_Ent #SKdwts maybe on a season heavier on real celebs, after all they had Bristol Palin TWICE, but not this season.

Others were hesitant, but they were willing to give Mota a chance.

@KristynBurtt @SheKnows_Ent I was like, "Really?", re Bethany Mota, but then I realized that she is a "star" in a different realm. #SKdwts

@KristynBurtt @SheKnows_Ent I didn't think so at first but I guess the show has to progress and change as our culture changes.

The final category was a group of her fans who were excited by the Teen Choice Award winner’s appearance on the show.
@KristynBurtt @SheKnows_Ent The face of entertainment has changed. Dwts is following the change. It's a good choice. #SKdwts

@KristynBurtt If reality"stars"can be on, why not her? The Internet is the new way people communicate, express and reach one another #SKdwts

@KristynBurtt @SheKnows_Ent Yes! Because being a YouTuber is becoming more and more of a career and these people are at a starlike status!

The real test will be out on that ballroom floor on Monday when the YouTube personality does the jive with dance pro Derek Hough. Fans will have to vote hard to keep Mota and her fellow celebrities on the show because the first couple goes home the following night. It’s brutal out there on that dance floor.
