The hacked photo scandal took an even darker turn late on Tuesday when Olympic gymnast McKayla Maroney admitted that she was underage in the photos. This was a reversal from the original tweet she put out on Monday when she wrote that they were fake.
She included a photo with a statue of Jesus with a quote that said, “You sir, need Jesus.” Maroney, who is now 18 years old, also thanked her fans for their support.
Now that she has revealed she was a minor, the case becomes a child pornography issue. TMZ reported that Maroney’s attorney issued a letter to Porn.com to remove the photos immediately. The gossip site said other websites were also sent letters that stated that Maroney owned the copyright to the photos.
A Porn.com rep told TMZ that they took down the photos the moment they received the letter.
The admission by Maroney adds the crime of distribution of child porn to the list. Reddit has been one of the sites that has been a major offender in the Apple iCloud account hacking.
They changed their policy in 2012 after Gawker found child porn throughout their site. Reddit told the site, “We have very few rules here on reddit; no spamming, no cheating, no personal info, nothing illegal, and no interfering with the site’s functions. Today we are adding another rule: No suggestive or sexual content featuring minors.”
Unfortunately, the site is run primarily by volunteers and a handful of community managers who are employed to monitor the volunteers.
Maroney’s 2012 Olympic teammate Aly Raisman voiced support for her fellow gold medal winner.
Please respect the fact that the photos were private and not for the whole world to see. My heart is broken for the women who were violated.

The FBI is currently investigating the source of the hacking.
