MTV VMAs: Katy Perry, Riff Raff hit the red carpet looking like Britney, J.T. — on purpose
Katy Perry's red carpet dress at the MTV Video Music Awards might have looked a little familiar.
Her custom Versace dress, made of a patchwork of rhinestoned denim, was a much-flashier but still almost identical version of the now-iconic dress Britney Spears wore to the American Music Awards in 2001.
Perry even had rapper Riff Raff on her arm in an all-denim suit — Justin Timberlake, anyone?
On the red carpet, Perry said the matching outfits were a throwback to Britney and Justin, and she tweeted before the event that her red carpet look would be "a result of my love for nostalgia and my tumblr addiction." She also tweeted that she and Riff Raff were "going for da best worst dressed" on the red carpet.

Now that we think about it, we probably should have seen it coming.
Spears posted a video to Instagram Saturday showing off her weirdly perfect Woody the Woodpecker impression. Perry called it the "best thing" she'd seen all day, and in response, Spears gave her 24 hours to do her own best impression.
Perry's response to the challenge?
"I'll show u my best impression on the red carpet at the VMA's tomorrow... Wait for it bb."
In hindsight, it makes perfect sense that she'd do a Britney Spears impression.
Fans on social media seemed torn over the outfit, with some loving it and others hating it. Perry responded to haters with a tweet saying "It's called FASHUN." And so far, Spears has been silent about her impression of Perry's look. They say imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, so we're sure Spears is going to love the throwback.
