American Idol alum Michael Johns tragically dies at age 35
Michael Johns, a former contestant on the seventh season of American Idol, died on Friday at the age of 35. It is believed the singer died suddenly from a blood clot caused by an ankle injury, TMZ reports.
The Australian-born singer-songwriter sought medical attention for the swelling and bruising of his ankle on Thursday, but the doctors sent him home after they were unable to find any serious problem.
The star died at his friends' house the next day, and American Idol producers and mentors have been shocked by the sudden death of one of the show's finalists.
"Michael Johns was an incredible talent and we are deeply saddened by the news of his passing," read a statement on American Idol's official Facebook page. "He was a part of our American Idol family and he will be truly missed. Our hearts and prayers go out to his family and friends during this difficult time."
Johns came in eighth place during American Idol Season 7 — the year David Cook emerged as the winner — and former mentor Simon Cowell took to Twitter to express his condolences.
"I just heard the very sad news that Michael Johns has passed away," Cowell tweeted on Saturday evening. "A truly great guy. Rest in peace Michael."
The show's host, Ryan Seacrest, also took to Twitter to say, "Sad news for the idol family…one of our own @Michael_Johns passed away. A consistently kind guy with talent for days. We'll miss you."
Actress Rita Wilson tweeted, "I'm so shocked and sad to hear my friend @michael_johns has passed away. A lovely man, a great voice, a beautiful wife, Stacy. Rest in peace."
Singer Josh Groban also expressed his sadness at Johns' passing, saying, "Oh no. @michael_johns has passed away. Such a wonderful guy and a great voice. Hung with him many times with @officialdfoster. Awful. RIP."
Our thoughts go out to the singer's family and friends during this sad time.
