Kristen Bell takes on the minimum wage issue as Mary Poppins

Even Mary Poppins is feeling the effects of a tough economy. In a new Funny or Die video, Kristen Bell takes on the minimum wage issue in this spoof as the beloved Disney character.

In the video, the House of Lies star has to quit her job as a nanny for the Banks family because she can’t support herself on $7.25 per hour. Bell sings a parody of “A Spoonful of Sugar” to explain to her two kid clients why she supports raising the federal minimum wage.

She sings, “In every job that must be done, you must be paid in more than fun.”

Millions of Americans live below the poverty line, many of the them domestic employees like Mary Poppins. Bell explains in the song that “just a $3 increase can make a living wage.”

Of course, there is a dig at the Republican party, which doesn’t support the increase. In the song, the actress says, “Are you a Republican? I do love a good Tea Party!”

The Veronica Mars star does bear a close resemblance to the woman who made the role famous, Julie Andrews. The legendary star won an Oscar in 1965 for her portrayal of everyone’s favorite babysitter.

Bell isn’t doing too badly in the Disney department either. The pregnant actress voiced Anna in Disney’s monster hit Frozen. She has also been vocal about wanting to star in the Broadway version of the movie that the company is developing. She’s now in rehearsal for a production of Hair at the Hollywood Bowl in early August.
