Singer Benji Cowart is making waves on the internet with his rhyming response explaining why he’s gotta be so rude when MAGIC! front man — or any man unworthy of his daughter — asks for his princess’s hand in marriage.

The video has already garnered over 3 million views, with catchy lyrics like, “You say you want my daughter for the rest of your life / Well you gotta make more than burgers and fries” and “I’m doin’ what a dad should do / Keepin’ her from a fool like you.”

Initially, however, the inspiration for “Rude” had nothing to do with a father’s rejection. In fact, the idea for the song came after Atweh spent a rough night with his then girlfriend, who he told Rolling Stone was “mean.” Thus, the idea for the lines, “Why you gotta be so rude? / Don’t you know I’m human too?” were born. The song evolved from there.

The reggae, summery hit has garnered a lot of attention this year already. It currently sits at No. 2 on the charts. And Cowart is not the first to point out a dad has to protect his baby girl and girls have to protect themselves.

Feminist and actress Lena Dunham pondered on Twitter, “Feel v. concerned about the girl who the song Rude is about. What’s her POV? Has she even consented to marrying a Canadian reggae singer?”

Cowart, on the other hand, is taking definitely taking the protective father stance in his music video. Watch it below.

Which side of the song do you agree with? Is Cowart correctly standing up for fathers everywhere?
