2014 BET Awards best speech: Nicki Minaj's near-death experience
The 2014 BET Awards ceremony saw Nicki Minaj walk away victorious, again. And the hip-hop star's speech was certainly one of the highlights of the night.
As the 2014 BET Awards kicked off live from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles, California, on Sunday, it was certainly a night filled with many memorable moments. One of the most memorable was Nicki Minaj's acceptance speech for her fifth consecutive Best Female Hip Hop Artist award.
"When you hear Nicki Minaj spit, Nicki Minaj wrote it," the "Starships" hit maker said about writing her own lyrics. The comment was met with speculation that she was having a dig at rival rapper Iggy Azalea's writing skills, or lack thereof. Azalea was also nominated for the award.
The star went on to speak her mind as well as reveal a near-death experience that has helped her embrace who she is.
"I really don't even care if I get my credit or if I don't. I don't look at myself as a female rapper 'cause I know what I do," she declared.
"I just want to say that the other day, literally, I didn't tell anybody this, I really thought I was about to die," she confessed. "Like, I was saying my prayers to die. And I didn't even want to call an ambulance because I thought, 'Well, if I call the ambulance, it's gonna be on TMZ.' And I would rather sit there and die. And it made me realize — I don't care anymore what anybody gotta say. I'm going to do me."
Minaj also performed her latest single, "Pills N Potions," during the four-hour ceremony.
