Judge orders food, fluids to be withheld from Casey Kasem
Casey Kasem's health has been overshadowed by a bitter custody battle, but does the court's latest decision mean the end for the radio host?
As Casey Kasem's condition appears to deteriorate, the family feud over his care continues. Kasem's wife and children have been fighting in court for more than a year about how best to take care of the radio host, and it looks like that fight may soon be coming to an end.
Just days after Kasem's daughter Kerri was granted custody and the 82-year-old was moved to a hospital, a judge has granted her request for authority to withhold medication, foods and fluid from her father. According to AllAccess, a radio industry website, the judge read a hospital report before making his decision and determined that giving Casey Kasem the food or fluid would "be more harmful and cause more pain" than not giving it to him.
"It would be acutely harmful for Mr. Kasem to have nutrition and hydration restored at this time," the judge said. "This was at the advisement of doctors at St. Anthony's."
"The court's decision today upheld our father's explicit wishes as expressed by him in his health directive," Kerri Kasem said.
According to CNN, that directive was signed by Casey Kasem in 2007 and said that he would not want to be kept alive if it would result in "a mere biological existence, devoid of cognitive function, with no reasonable hope for normal functioning."
But Jean Kasem, Casey's wife, left the courtroom saying, "You have blood on your hands." According to the New York Daily News, her attorney agreed, telling the judge, "You just imposed a death sentence."
But Kerri Kasem said the decision is the most difficult choice she has ever had to make.
"We have tried everything to keep him alive," she said. "We did put him back on fluids, but we had to take him off again because his lungs were filling up. It sounded like he was drowning. It was excruciating to watch."
The judge also upheld the ruling that granted Kerri Kasem's custody of her father. Although it's not clear what effect the new decision will have on Casey Kasem, the newest court appearance by his family shows that the iconic radio host may very well be in his last few days.
