Deryck Whibley looked frail as he was released from the hospital, but he is on the road to recovery and receiving support from friends, old and new.
Deryck Whibley decided to publicly document his near-death experience with alcohol, and is now on the path to recovery. The Sum 41 singer was released from the hospital and was spotted out with his fiancée Jocelyn Aguilar in Los Angeles on Monday, May 19.
Whibley’s hospital stay lasted a month, and the rocker admitted it was because years of heavy drinking “finally caught up to me.” He posted a personal and emotional statement to his website explaining how his drinking nearly killed him.
“the reason i got so sick is from all the hard boozing i’ve been doing over the years,” he wrote. “it finally caught up to me.”

“i was drinking hard every day. until one night. i was sitting at home, poured myself another drink around mid night and was about to watch a movie when all of a sudden i didn’t feel so good,” he wrote. “needless to say it scared me straight. i finally realized i can’t drink anymore. if I have one drink the doc’s [sic] say i will die.
“i’m not preaching or anything but just always drink responsibly. i didn’t, and look where that got me,” he added.
Whibley’s path to recovery will be a long one, but it looks like he has plenty of support from family and friends. He also hopes to be back in the studio making new music very soon.
“i already have a few song ideas for new songs,” he wrote. “soon it will be time to start making an album and getting back to touring again.”
