Reality television brings jaw-dropping entertainment on a fairly consistent basis, but these moments will live on long after their programs have stopped airing.
Jersey Shore‘s Snooki gets punched
During the first season of MTV‘s mega-hit about eight housemates living the “Guido” lifestyle in Seaside Heights, NJ, one of the female stars was punched in a bar scene. While the scene did air on-screen during the previous episode as a teaser of what was to come, it was not aired as a part of the episode that aired — this was a decision made by MTV. They felt the violence was not necessary to the narrative arc of the story.
Toddlers and Tiaras creates a Pretty Woman controversy
As if toddlers and pageants don’t create enough controversy already, one mother decided to dress her three-year-old daughter up in an outfit as an homage to Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman. Since Roberts played a prostitute in the movie, there was a public outcry. Even some of the pageant moms were offended.
The Bachelor picked the wrong girl and then dumped her on national television
Season 13 wasn’t so lucky for contestant Melissa Rycroft, who was picked by The Bachelor Jason Mesnick in the finale — only to find out on the After the Final Rose special that aired an hour later that he really meant to pick contestant Molly Malaney.
A Britain’s Got Talent contestant stuns the audience and judges
Susan Boyle didn’t look the part, so she was immediately the butt of the joke when she took the stage on Britain’s Got Talent, one of the many talent competitions run by well-known producer and judge Simon Cowell. Some moments are so huge that they span the globe. It was easy to believe him when he said, “I knew the minute you walked out on that stage that we were going to hear something extraordinary, and I was right.”
Boyle’s performance makes one wonder if she’s not the catalyst for the The Voice.
Jessica Simpson is confused about tuna on Newlyweds: Nick and Jessica
The silly things people do when they’re with their spouses can come back to haunt them when they let it all hang out on reality television. Whether or not Jessica Simpson really confused tuna and chicken because of the brand on the can we’ll never know, but she’ll be forever labeled a dumb blonde because of it.
William Hung auditions with She Bangs on American Idol
This time Simon Cowell knew exactly what he was getting when William Hung stepped onto the stage, and it was another moment that spanned the globe. Don’t feel too sorry for Hung; the season 3 contestant went on to record three albums and his first album, Inspiration, went on to number one on Billboard’s Top Independent Album chart.
