Captain & Tennille are divorcing after 39 years of marriage
It looks like The Captain & Tennille's love has come to an end. Tennille filed for divorce last week, but no one was more surprised than the Captain.
It appears love kept them together for just short of 40 years. The singing duo of The Captain & Tennille are getting a divorce.
The Prescott, Arizona courthouse confirmed to People that Toni Tennille (real name Cathryn Antoinette Tennille) filed for divorce nearly a week ago. The couple met while the Captain, whose real name is Daryl Dragon, was playing keyboards for the Beach Boys. After the Captain and Tennille met, they formed their group, launching into superstardom. They won a Grammy only a year after forming.
The band's website was updated with an odd message this week:
"Until Thursday, Jan. 16th, 2014, when Toni Tennille met with a divorce attorney, in Phoenix, Arizona, everything relating to The Captain & Tennille appeared to the public as them being the ideal model for a 'rock-solid' married pair. But almost all people naturally evolve over time, & sometimes hidden feelings start to be uncovered when one may read, just a little more into (the popularized, substitute heading appearing just below), stating, for instance: 'music has kept them together.'"
TMZ called Dragon, who seemed like he had no idea what was going on. He told them, "I don't know why she filed. I gotta figure it out for myself first."
The Captain & Tennille are one of many celebrity couples who have filed for divorce in recent months. The couple's big hits included "Love Will Keep Us Together," "Muskrat Love" and "Do That To Me One More Time."
In 2010, Tennille announced that Dragon was diagnosed with a condition similar to Parkinson's Disease, and suffered from tremors she called "pretty severe at times," but it's not clear if that had anything to do with her decision to file.
Dragon and Tennille have been married for 39 years, and are now 71 and 73 respectively. The couple have no children.
