Music review: The CW's Reign has a gripping promo track

What's in a name? Plenty. But for television promos, those few minutes onscreen have to be accompanied by just the right musical track. If done right, you can hook new and old audiences. Reign may have got it just right, so instead I ask, "What's in a trailer's song?"

Reign costars

The CW added a third member to their league of success stories this past year with Reign.

They knew they had fans craving The Vampire Diaries, but proved lightning could strike twice with the hit show Arrow. But a third time? Even I was surprised by the addicting period drama.

The Vampire Diaries premieres this week too! Could Caroline finally kiss that hunk we all know she likes?

Well, the holiday season rolled around and I went into depression eagerly anticipating my guilty pleasures on the popular network. But enough time had crept by where I even forgot when they were premiering.

Until today.

I stumbled upon the promo trailer for the Jan. 23 premiere (yes, that's this week!) and I had to stop what I was doing. I mean, I knew where the characters left their stories, but I felt as though I left my living room and was in a theater watching a trailer for a blockbuster film.

Yeah, the song choice was so gripping, it elevated the plot lines I already was familiar with to a level of calamity. I mean, heck I set an alarm to catch the premiere on Thursday.

The mysterious song is entitled "Invincible" by experimental folk/alternative-rock band All Good Things. It is a furious combination of drums, violins and electric guitar, accompanied by John Petty's contemplative voice that carries the lyrics from moments of reflection through to explosive wailing.

I would be willing to wager that had you heard this song unattached to the show, you would've easily imagined it paired with a fast-paced action flick.

But, if you don't know anything about Reign, you may want to check out what thrilling story could evoke such adrenaline and a brilliant pairing. This song definitely makes the premiere worth the watch. It's not every day, or every show that gets an epic re-introduction for its spring premiere.
