2013’s Best songs in commercials

There’s more to commercials than selling a product. Sometimes, they also sell a song. In these 10 instances, it was definitely the music that caught our attention and kept us watching.

This year’s musical insertions into commercials were especially good. We’re skipping the obvious songs like Katy Perry’s “Roar” in the Citi ThankYou Preferred Card commercial and opting to let you in on some music you may have thought sounded good, but never took the time to research.

10 Best commercials of 2013 >>

1) Nokia Lumia 1020 — “Concert Queen”
Song: The Colourist, “Little Games”
The Colourist is already featured fairly prominently in the Lumia commercial, but we thought a quick reminder might help.

2) Laughing Cow Wedges — “Live to Laugh”
Song: Fitz and The Tantrums, “The Walker”
A relatively new band with a really, really great song. We’re happy they “sold out” and will soon find themselves with even more fans.

3) Tropicana Farmstand — “Cool Clerk”
Song: Passion Pit, “Carried Away”
Passion Pit gets us every time and “Carried Away” is an especially great song.

Maybe next year we’re hear a little Dan Croll on a commercial >>

4) Samsung Galaxy S4 — “Best of the GS4”
Song: The 1975, “Menswear”
Brilliant. We love the 1975 and we’re digging Samsung’s use of their music.

5) Expedia — “Find Your Travel Companion”
Song: Electric Guest, “Waves”
So. Much. Fun.

6) T-Mobile — “iPad Air Here”
Song: Phoenix, “Entertainment”
This isn’t Phoenix’s first commercial rodeo, but it’s our favorite.

7) Olive Garden — “Holiday Promotion and Lunch Special”
Song: Sufjan Stevens, “Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing”
You may not recognize the tune unless you already know the song, but it’s worth checking out.

8) Old Navy — “Winter Wear Sale”
Song: Vampire Blow, “Let’s Go Out”
Old Navy’s Winter ad placement makes this song seem like a holiday song, but it’s actually festive enough for year-round use.

9) Target — “Threshold”
Song: Jocelyn Alice and Right the Stars, “So Groovy”
Easily the commercial most likely to get us off the couch, on our feet and dancing out the door.

10) 2013 Hyundai Santa Fe — “Epic Playdate”
Song: The Flaming Lips, “Sun Blows Up Today”
Hyundai gets major bonus points for actually convincing such a big-name band to star in the commercial.

Did we catch all your favorite commercials? What other products found themselves with a great soundtrack this year?
