INTERVIEW: Supernatural's Misha Collins on losing his wings
Misha Collins talks about Castiel becoming human on this season of Supernatural, plus the latest episode of his web series where he cooks with his 3-year-old son.
Misha Collins is one very busy guy. Not only does he star as Castiel on Supernatural, he also does tons of charity work with his non-profit organization Random Acts, films his own online cooking series with his 3-year-old son and is also set to direct his first episode of Supernatural in early 2014.
SheKnows and some other members of the press got the chance to chat with Collins at Creation Entertainment's Salute to Supernatural event in Burbank last weekend, where he talked about nearly everything he has on his plate these days.
Recently, we at SheKnows posted a poll asking whether or not Castiel should stay human on Supernatural or return to his original state as an angel. We asked Collins if he was enjoying playing Cas as human this season, and if he would want him to stay that way or not.
"Yes, and I don't know. One of the things I like about working on Supernatural is that it hasn't gotten stagnant for my character. There's always something going on," Collins said, adding, "making him be a human was something that I had my fingers crossed that they would do back in Season 5. So I'm really glad that they've finally done it and I think they've done it in a really good way. So I'm really happy about it."
Castiel has been dealing with some of the more mundane aspects of being a human, such as feeding himself and even getting a job in a convenience store. But he still has a lot of big stuff on his plate.
"I think the big question that Cas is grappling with right now is: Is there meaning in being just a human? Is working in a convenience store, in and of itself, not only gratifying and a fulfilling but a purpose that gives meaning to one's existence? That's a pretty good question to be grappling with," Collins said.
Asked for more teasers about what's coming up for Castiel in the rest of this season, Collins joked, "I know things that I can't talk about and it's not just because I'm clairvoyant — which I am."
Collins also told us that he and his son West had just finished shooting another episode of his cooking series Cooking Fast and Fresh with West. Apparently, it's not as easy to cook with a 3-year-old West as it was when he was younger.
"Cooking Fast and Fresh with West, for those of you who haven't seen it, is a little weird web series that is pretty fun [and] the third installment was shot yesterday," Collins revealed. "I was a little nervous because [West] is older and he's talking now, and he's a little self-conscious of the camera and stuff like that."
Little boys do like toys that make noise, including those toys that aren't so much toys as they are appliances. After the appliances came out, things apparently got hilarious.
"It started really lame because he just wasn't doing the stuff that he did before and then when he got into the kitchen appliances things really took shape. So it's really funny. I [had] tears streaming down my face, I couldn't stop laughing," Collins said with a laugh.
