The Vampire Diaries sneak peek: Meet the Augustine Vampire

We knew Damon had a sordid past, but this whole experimental side of him is something we never expected.

Damon faces The Society in The Vampire Diaries

If it weren't for all the good food and family time we knew was coming this Thursday, we would be pretty upset that The Vampire Diaries isn't new. As it is, we get it. That doesn't mean we won't be anxiously awaiting the next episode of the show, especially given Damon's (Ian Somerhalder) unexpected end last episode.

Things are only going to get more interesting. Just because he's locked in a cell doesn't mean life for Damon will be uneventful. Anything but. Plus, we'll learn about he and Dr. Wes Maxfield's mysterious pasts, and their connection to The Augustine Society when the show returns Dec. 5.

It isn't Damon's first time being locked up in that cell. From brief flashbacks we've already garnered that The Society experimented on him sometime in the '50s. Turns out, while Stefan (Paul Wesley) was running around with Klaus (Joseph Morgan), Damon wasn't having such a great time. No wonder the guy's a little off. When the show returns, we'll get a lot more details about his juicy past.

According to The CW, in the next episode we will get "flashbacks to a dark time in Damon's life."

The official synopsis tells us, "Stefan continues to offer Katherine (Nina Dobrev) his support while tying to mask his ownEnzo joins The Vampire Diaries' cast pain, until Caroline (Candice Accola) shows up with an unusual form of therapy. After trying to make amends with Caroline, Elena grows so concerned about Damon that she turns to Aaron for help.

Later, when Damon tells Elena about a terrible ordeal in his past that he has kept secret for decades, she shares the disturbing information she just learned about her own family. Finally, Aaron decides on a desperate course of action after a conversation with Dr. Wes."

Here's our interpretation of what we think that means: Stefan and Katherine continue to bond, growing closer and closer to their inevitable make-out session. Caroline becomes the new Lexi in Stefan's life. Elena and Aaron are fast becoming BFFs while Caroline deals with Jesse's death. She'll still be on the "you've changed" boat when it comes to Elena.

Then, after Elena comes to the rescue and saves Damon from the creepy cell, Damon spills on the details of his time with The Society. In her investigations to uncover Damon's location, Elena will discover her family was somehow involved with The Society. Perhaps they were fully supportive members. Aaron knows about The Society but doesn't necessarily agree with its actions. It sounds like he may just choose to side with the vampires by the end of the episode.

A new character will also be trapped with Damon. We're guessing he's the Augustine Vampire. His name is Enzo (pictured at right) and, judging by the pictures, he hasn't had a great time with The Society either (see above).

The next episode of The Vampire Diaries airs on Thursday, Dec. 5, at 8/7c on The CW.
