Anjelica Huston driven to suicide attempt by boyfriend
Anjelica Huston slashed her wrist in a desperate attempt to get her older boyfriend's attention when she was just 18.
In an eye-opening memoir, Anjelica Huston revealed she nearly killed herself when she was 18 years old in an effort to get a much older boyfriend's attention.
In her new tell-all, A Story Lately Told: Coming of Age in Ireland, London and New York, Huston details a series of affairs she had — apart from her long relationship with Jack Nicholson — with older men when she was just a young girl. Included in her stormy relationships was a love affair with celebrity photographer Bob Richardson, who ultimately drove her to an attempted suicide.
An 18-year-old Huston met Richardson, then 42, during a photo shoot with Harper's Bazaar to promote her movie A Walk with Love and Death. With an immediate attraction, the pair began a volatile romance fueled by Richardson's mental problems; he had bipolar disorder and was also schizophrenic. The famed photographer would go into crazy fits that lasted for days.
During one of these long, frenzied tantrums where he became demonic with rage, throwing things and acting nuts, Huston retreated to the bathroom and slashed her wrist out of total distress.
"One morning, four days into one of these ordeals, I walked into the bathroom at the Chelsea [Hotel] and, in desperation, drew a razor blade across my left wrist," Huston wrote in her book. "I ran back into the bedroom, blood spurting from the vein, crying to him: 'Will this make you love me?'"
After this, Richardson suggested they go on vacation to try to relieve their mutual stresses. The ill-fated couple went to Mexico, but had a crazy trip where they almost got shot by police. Ultimately, Huston dumped Richardson after she'd had enough of his craziness. The troubled photographer was, of course, Terry Richardson's father, who has himself gained a shady reputation for his racy photo shoots.
Other older-men relationships Huston had included one with a then-28-year-old James Fox, who seduced her when she was just 17 years old. The pair would partake in short "after-school visits," but even though Fox called Huston his girlfriend, she knew she was just a temporary fling.
Fox was seeing a woman called Andee Cohen, and seemed "very much in love" with her. Huston's relationship with Fox ended after a short affair, but she claims that "Willy Fox had broken my heart."
