Fame isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. After appearing in several blockbusters, actress Kelly McGillis left Hollywood and never looked back.
In 1986, Kelly McGillis heated up the screen with Tom Cruise in Top Gun. It was arguably the biggest film of her career. It made her one of the most sought-after actresses of the 1980s. But these days, McGillis is no longer a Hollywood fixture, and she wants to keep it that way.
According to People, McGillis is content living the quiet life. The actress prefers to stay out of the spotlight, away from New York and Los Angeles.
“I’m really happy where I live [Asheville, North Carolina],” she said. “I really feel spiritually fed by living in the country. I tried to move closer to Philadelphia so I could get to New York easier. I lived in the suburbs, and I just did not like it, not one bit.”
McGillis revealed that she was never comfortable with fame. After appearing in both Witness and Top Gun, she was easily recognizable. That’s when things got too weird. “If I walked into a restaurant, everybody knew who I was. That was really overwhelming… I never wanted that kind of recognition. I just wanted to be able to act. That was really difficult for me. It was very scary.”
She continued, “I wasn’t prepared for that psychologically. I don’t know how one would prepare for that. I had a tough time dealing with being a household name.”
At 56, the former screen siren is content staying in the background. “I’m exceedingly happy. I have a very quiet, little normal life, and I love it.”
