Nina Dobrev is taking charge of her life after her public breakup with Ian Somerhalder. She talks to Cosmopolitan magazine about the exciting possibilities.

NinaDobrevCosmoNina Dobrev is a woman on the move. In addition to returning for Season 5 of The Vampire Diaries, she's charting a new course after the end of her relationship with co-star Ian Somerhalder. She opened up to Cosmopolitan magazine in their September issue.

The 24-year-old actress made headlines when she and Somerhalder split in May, but she has a great friend in former Dancing with the Stars pro Julianne Hough to lean on.

Dobrev shared what makes their friendship so special: "It's been cool to find an active buddy — there are lots of girlie girls around. We don't talk about makeup; we talk about life."

Hough also went through her own high-profile breakup with media mogul Ryan Seacrest this spring. Even though they went through the same life event around the same time, it's not what brought them together as friends.

Dobrev said, "That's not what our friendship is about. Unfortunately, that’s how it's perceived, but there's more to us. People aren't defined by their relationships. The whole point is being true to yourself and not losing yourself in relationships, whether romances or friendships."

With her personal life in transition, the women's magazine asked whether there's a lot of pressure to define what is next in her life.

"Maybe. I can take a lot of pressure, though. I'm constantly trying to make myself better, to learn more," said the CW star. "I didn't finish college, so I feel like I'm always having to prove myself. I don't want to feel like the smallest person in the room."

One thing she is tackling is taking her love for yoga to a whole new level. She wants to share that opportunity with others who may be seeking change in their life.

"I want to open my own yoga studio. Planning construction and looking at properties is fun. I'm using a different part of my brain. You know that feeling when you use a different muscle? You're excited to be exercising it but you get a little sore! Yoga changed my life. Hopefully, it will do that for others," said Dobrev.

As for her next relationship, the girl knows exactly what she's looking for.

She said, "You either have chemistry or you don't, but a lot of what attracts me is a guy's mind and humor and talent. I need to get to know all those things before I fall for someone. I'm not a one-night-stand kind of girl. I'm a relationship girl."

No matter what Dobrev sets her mind to in business or in love, she has a definite path that she's ready to follow.

The Vampire Diaries returns to the CW on Oct. 3.
