Filming a movie based on a comic book is always a tricky business. It’s important to keep the entertainment value while staying true to the original comic book.
So when signing on for the newest installment in the Spider-Man franchise, Emma Stone had a big decision on her hands. Because Stone’s character Gwen Stacy died in the original story, fans expect it to happen in the film series. But does Stacy have to die?
Director Marc Webb spoke with MTV at Comic-Con in San Diego about Gwen Stacy’s fate.
“There are parts of the canon we feel really obligated to,” Webb said. “There are parts that we deviate from. The Gwen Stacy saga is a very important and powerful one, but Emma is an incredibly beguiling actress, and I like having her around.”
Stone was photographed on the set of The Amazing Spider-Man 2 in a green and purple outfit, similar to the one Gwen Stacy wore when she died in the original story. The photos likely mean Stone’s role will end in the second movie adaptation of the comic book. But, as with other changes made in the film, there is always a chance her death could change as well.
Stone and Andrew Garfield (who plays Spider-Man) are a real-life couple, and their relationship adds to the chemistry of the films. But the story is more important to Webb than the characters themselves. That doesn’t mean Gwen Stacy is doomed, however.
“From the beginning of this, I wanted to create a universe that would unfold over a longer period of time,” he said. “Honestly, I did think of it more as a trilogy initially, but there are so many interesting and provocative characters that we sort of found little place for, that to develop that is proving to be pretty exciting and pretty fun. There has to be a sense of clarity with each of the films, so that usually involves focusing on certain characters.”
The Amazing Spider-Man 3 and The Amazing Spider-Man 4 are set for release in 2016 and 2018, respectively. Webb said the plot to the third and fourth films could be revealed (whether we know it or not) in the second film in the series.
“If you pay attention to the movie that will come out a year from now on May 2,” the director told MTV, “you may get some hints as to what’s to come in the future.”
The Amazing Spider-Man 2 will be in theaters May 2, 2014.
