Carly Rae on bad boy Bieber: The media are brutal
Carly Rae Jepsen thinks we all need to calm down and give Justin Bieber a break.
It seems like people — including Saturday Night Live star Bill Hader, photographers and his Calabasas neighbors — love to hate on Justin Bieber, but the 19-year-old singer has Carly Rae Jepsen square in his corner.
"I actually am so out of the loop on any of that, to be honest. People are constantly, like, 'Is Justin OK?' I've not really noticed any of that," Jepsen tells Billboard of the questions about his recent bad behavior.
"I feel like Justin's a guy who's working hard every day, and I think the media can sometimes be a little brutal with stuff and over-exaggerate things."
Then again, she might be just a little biased since her Canadian colleague is the champion behind her career and smash single "Call Me Maybe."
"But I stand by him. I support him," she adds. "I think he's a good guy, and he's doing the best he can."
The 27-year-old (yes, she's actually 27!) also dishes on her upcoming album and says we shouldn't expect more of the same bubblegum sound. Instead, get ready for a fusion of folk and electro-pop.
"My favorite pop artists at the moment are Robyn… Kimbra, La Roux and Dragonette," Jepsen says. "And I think I have a folky side in my blood from what I used to listen to with my parents, and it'll be fun to incorporate of that more in the verses of the pop songs, a little something deeper to the verses."
"That's what I love about the pop stars I just named, is they don't do just your regular kind of pop songs," she adds. "There's some stuff to hold onto and dig into. That's what I want to do."
