We’re heading back to Middle-earth for The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug. The sequel introduces a new villain and reunites us with old friends.
They’re back! In The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, the dwarves, elves and wizards have returned. The title character, Bilbo Baggins (Martin Freeman), will encounter his biggest foe yet — Smaug. It’s a giant dragon who has destroyed the dwarf kingdom of Erebor. Is nothing sacred?
Warner Bros. has released the film’s first trailer, which introduces us to the terrifying creature. It’s portrayed by Benedict Cumberbatch, who does the voice and body movements via motion-capture. The actor previously appeared as the Necromancer in the The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey.
For fans of BBC’s Sherlock, this is a dream come true. On the hit show, Cumberbatch plays Sherlock Holmes and Freeman stars as John Watson. The best friends turn enemies in this visual treat.
The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug introduces us to several new characters. We’re the most excited about the warrior elf Tauriel, played by Lost’s Evangeline Lilly. Plus, we can expect the return of Orlando Bloom‘s Legolas, Ian McKellen’s Gandalf and Lee Pace’s Thranduil.
The film seems to have a much darker tone than its predecessor. It’s less of a journey and more of a war. Check out the first trailer for the film below.
