Essential oils are a great way to take your health and beauty routine back to the basics. Here are 10 essentials you should familiarize yourself with, along with their uses.
Lemon essential oil
Using oil to stop oily skin sounds counterproductive, but that’s exactly what lemon essential oil does. Just rub a drop or two onto skin in problem areas, and the oil production in that area will slow down.
Lavender essential oil
Lavender essential oil is a great moisturizer. Simply rub onto dry skin and watch as that area becomes (and stays) moisturized. It’s also an effective scar reducer – just rub it onto the effected area once or twice a day regularly, and you’ll start to see improvement.
Peppermint essential oil
Peppermint essential oil has a calming effect on your stomach. A drop in your tea each day will help keep your digestion regular, and inhaling the scent will soothe an upset stomach. Smelling this oil will also help curb the urge to snack, so keep some handy at your desk or in your purse.
Rosemary essential oil
If you deal with dandruff, rosemary may just be your new best friend. Simply massage it onto your scalp and let it sit for at least 30 minutes before you wash it off. You can also mix a few drops in with your shampoo.
Chamomile essential oil
Chamomile tea has been known to induce sleepiness, so it makes sense that chamomile essential oils would do the same thing. Add several drops to a warm bath for a bath that will rid you of insomnia.
Rose otto essential oil
We’ll try anything to get rid of PMS symptoms, right? Add a few drops of rose otto essential oils to a carrier oil and massage into your neck and shoulders to ease monthly pains.
Cedarwood essential oil
Cedarwood essential oil is known to be healing and soothing. Mix with carrier oil and rub it onto sore muscles or arthritis spots to soothe aches and pains. Use several drops in a warm bath to alleviate symptoms of kidney problems and urinary tract infections.
Jasmine is a feel-good essential oil. Add a few drops to a diffuser or lamp ring to chase away symptoms of depression and calm your nerves. Inhaling the scent of jasmine has also been known to improve the libidos of both men and women, both when inhaled and when mixed with massage oil.
Geranium essential oil
Cellulite, be gone! Mix geranium essential oil with a carrier oil and massage it onto your skin to minimize the appearance of cellulite.
Tea tree essential oil
There are many essential oils that claim to be effective against acne, but tea tree essential oil is one of the most proven for that cause. Add a few drops to your normal moisturizer, or mix with a carrier oil and apply it to problem areas.
Many essential oils are not safe to use undiluted, so mix with a carrier oil before use if you’re unsure.
