5 Steps to brighter skin
Scoring a gorgeous glow at home just got a whole lot more fun! Whip up this fab, do-it-yourself turmeric–lemon juice facial mask recipe to achieve the bright, beautiful skin you’ve always coveted on the red carpet. Because hey, it’s your time to shine, baby!
What you'll need
- 1 tablespoon of gram flour (also known as garbanzo bean, chickpea or besan flour and can be found at any Whole Foods or Indian grocery store)
- 1 teaspoon of turmeric
- A few drops of lemon juice (you can add a little more if your skin is either oily or acne-prone)
- Whole milk
How to make it
First, mix the turmeric and flour together until they're well combined.
"The flour helps with consistency, ensuring that the liquid turns into a mask and actually stays on your face," points out Alexis.
For those of you who didn't know, turmeric is a spice commonly used by Indian women (brides particularly!) to brighten their skin tone and give it a radiant glow. So trust us when we say it works!
Once you've mixed the turmeric and flour together, slowly add in the whole milk until a creamy paste has formed. The fat in the milk is a good moisturizer, says Alexis.
Now, squeeze your lemon into the bowl (or add lemon juice to the mix) and stir again.
According to Alexis, "The citric acid in the lemon juice and the lactic acid in the milk will help to exfoliate by breaking down dead skin cells, which, in turn, resurfaces new, brighter skin."
Leave your mask on for 15 to 20 minutes or until your skin feels tight. Then, wash it off with warm water and a washcloth, making sure to be gentle on your face. Be warned: The yellow pigment will stain your cloth, so you may want to dedicate a washcloth just to rinsing off this mask!
Finally, splash your face and neck with cold water before patting dry and apply a light moisturizer. You're all finished — and glowing!
