How to prep your hair for summer
Hair breakage and damage come with the summer season -- but you don't have to avoiding those pools and sun rays! Learn how to keep your hair fresh and moisturized with these tips from Nicholas Penna Jr., owner and lead stylist of SalonCapri.
Step 1: Shower before a swim
It seems we are always at war with damaged or dry hair, and chlorine, salt and natural lake sediments are the enemy. Before plunging into the water this summer, Penna recommends pre-washing and conditioning your hair; don’t be shy about using the garden hose! Nick suggests using L’Oreal Professionnel Serie Expert Solar Sublime for the pre-wash. Once your hair is pre-washed, spray or comb in a leave-in conditioner to further hydrate your locks. As odd as wetting your hair before a swim sounds, soaking your hair in fresh, filtered water protects it from harmful environmental agents.
Step 2: Lighten up
Summer is the time to let your hair go a couple shades lighter, but Penna warns that methods such as lemon juice and hydrogen peroxide can increase dryness and breakage. Avoid the damage by applying a mixture of lemon juice and conditioner on dampened hair. As your hair dries in the sun, your hair will lighten but stay moisturized.
Step 3: Rehab your hair
When you officially retire from the day’s beach-bum activities, make sure to hop into the shower to start rehab for your hair. Penna suggests using a restorative shampoo, such as Shu Uemura Silk Bloom Restorative Shampoo. This will remove chemicals and will help rebuild your hair.
Step 4: Fight frizz
The summer humidity can make your straight hair go frizzy in a matter of minutes! Prevention is possible with a dollop of a good moisturizing cream-based product. Spread the dollop evenly through your hair using your fingers. This is a great way to tame the frizzies while returning moisture to your hair!
Step 5: Condition, condition, condition
Summer heat can weaken and dry hair fast. A conditioning treatment instantly adds life and moisture to your hair. To give your hair the boost of conditioning and shine it deserves, Penna recommends L’Oreal’s Power Dose.
