Sometimes being a busy mom means sacrificing style. Who has time to shop for new clothes or perfect a new makeup look when there are kids to wrangle, laundry to do and meals to prepare?

But spicing up your look doesn’t have to be time-consuming or expensive. We have some simple (and affordable) tips and trips for updating your style no matter how many mom-duties are on your to-do list.

Clean out your closet

Fun? No. Essential? Yes. The first step towards easily elevated style is cleaning out your closet. You can’t change anything about your wardrobe if you don’t even know what’s hiding in among the stacks of sweaters or rows of pants and skirts. This exercise is twofold. On one hand, you’ll likely get rid of a bunch of things you don’t wear, making it much easier to navigate your closet and put outfits together. On the other hand, you’ll also rediscover items you’ve forgotten about or haven’t worn in years but still like.

Add some on-trend pieces

Shop for: Patterned tops, pastel denim, tribal print accessories, bold tank tops

If you’ve discovered that you have a solid collection of basics – pencil skirts, blazers and denim that fit well, cardigans and jackets – you can add some seasonal trends to your closet as a way to keep your look current. We don’t suggest building an entire wardrobe around items that may be out of style in a few months, but combining classic pieces you already own with trendier pieces is an easy way to elevate your style. Stores like Mango, Zara and H&M are great places to look for current yet affordable items.

Say yes to great shoes

Shoes can really be a girl’s best friend where fashion is concerned. A basic outfit of jeans and a white T-shirt can become a standout look with the right footwear. Add a pair of espadrille wedges or pointed toe flats in a vibrant hue and all of a sudden, you’re more pulled together. While flip flops and running shoes are great, add a few pairs of stylish shoes to your closet to really elevate your day-to-day look. For summer, think about a wedge sandal, pair of colorful ballet flats and a cute canvas pair with a fun print like stripes or polka dots.

A variety of lipstickBuy a new lip color

Sounds simple, right? And it is, but it's also effective when it comes to looking and feeling better about your overall style. If you’ve been wearing the same shade of lip color for years (or forgoing it altogether), we suggest treating yourself to a summer-ready hue (think coral, berry or peach). The new shade and hint of tint will give you an instant beauty boost. There’s no need to don a full face of makeup (especially in the summer), but a new shade will brighten up your complexion and your look.

Don’t discount accessories

Accessories – be it a swoon-worthy purse, statement cuff or fabulous hat – can really elevate your overall style. But they don’t have to be expensive. Invest in one really standout bag that will last you and that can go anywhere (a shoulder flap bag is a good choice), and then simply choose items that catch your eye. Affordable yet eye-catching jewelry abounds at thrift stores, vintage shops, H&M and even Etsy.
