Payless fall 2010 and spring 2011 designer lines
These days, it truly feels good to pay less. That's why Payless ShoeSource has become the go-to retailer for designer shoes at affordable prices. During Fashion Night Out in New York City, top fashion designers Christian Siriano, Lela Rose, and Isabel Toledo gathered at a midtown Manhattan Payless to discuss their current fall collections and their upcoming lines for spring, available in February.
Christian Siriano for Payless™
Christian Siriano's spring line for Payless will mirror the eye-catching, multi-cultural collection he showed during Fashion Week. On the catwalk the shoes were high -- architecturally stacked wedges and stilettos. But how will the fierce designer interpret the glamazon styles for Payless?
"I want them to feel and look expensive. You're getting a lot of style and glamour for the money," Siriano said during an in-store appearance on Fashion's Night Out. "We commercialize them a bit so they're not as high. We keep some of the elements the same, but we have to make them for every woman."
This is the Project Runway alum's second year and sixth season working with Payless. For spring 2011, the Maryland native said he found trendy and fashion-forward fabrics.
For spring, Siriano created four styles for the runway that will be modified for Payless:
- Shaghai, an Asian-inspired platform peep-toe pump with a chopstick-inspired wood heel.
- Mumbai, a strappy, curved-point heel inspired by ancient Buddhist temple architecture.
- Nairobi, a tightly spaced, tubular strapped platform heel influenced by neckties worn by women in the southeast Asian Padaung tribe.
- Zanzi, a bootie with a unique heel designed to look like a hand-carved African tribal tool.
Siriano's fall collection was inspired by antique furniture details and the everyday glamour of 1960s Parisian women. The line features seven shoe styles with scrolled filigree ornamentation on flats and pumps, and three croc-material handbags (a clutch, tote and satchel). Styles include:
- "Exotic" sandal and platform pump
- "Storm" rain boot
- "Empress" dress boot
- "Royalty" flat
- "Midnight" d'Orsay evening shoe
- "Walk it Out" sneaker.
Lela Rose for Payless™
Lela Rose has done more than a dozen collections for Payless. For spring 2011, the popular bridal designer will debut a colorful, Peruvian-inspired collection with "raffia and leather stacked heels, fun wedges, and great shapes."
"It's such a unique opportunity to work with a company you feel represents your products well," Rose said during Fashion's Night Out. "And you can offer a product for $35. That's a unique situation we don't get to offer in our ready-to-wear or bridal world.
Rose's fall collection includes four shoe styles and three handbags, all inspired by the textural landscapes of the moon and earth. The shoes channel this inspiration with details such as the "Satellite" print fabric with scattered crystals; the "Gerlinde" ankle-bootie; and the "Aamelia" flat style featuring choppy detailing to suggest moon rocks and the craggy surface of the Galapagos Islands. The line also features the "Linzia" pump, as well as a clutch, shopper and satchel.
Isabel Toledo for Payless™
Isabel Toledo is best known for creating the stunning yellowish-green dress and matching overcoat that First Lady Michelle Obama wore on Inauguration Day. Now, instead of paying top dollar at Barney's, the masses can flaunt one of Toledo's premier designs for Payless.
"I worked with [Payless] for the accessibility. My company is so small and precious, and we do so little as far as production that, all of a sudden, to be able to get to so many clients is incredible," says the Cuban-American designer. "It's really the democratization of fashion. It's communication and goes straight to the people."
The Isabel Toledo for Payless designer line debuted this fall with seven footwear and three handbag styles -- a range of essential silhouettes including pumps, heeled wedges and flats. The collection reflects Toledo's desire to create smart, graphic and functional shoes that can be worn every day. Her line for spring will also reflect her urban sophistication.
Toledo's styles for fall include:
- the quirky "Ghillie" style done in a wedge heel that she describes as her "walking shoes"
- a comfortable flat
- a tall "Poodle Belted" boot
- the "Sliver" bootie
- the "Front-Fold" bootie
- the "Pom Pom" ballet flat
- the "Toreador" d'Orsay pump
The shoes feature zig-zag ripple sole treatments perfect for navigating city streets and inclement weather. Handbags include a satchel, tote, and clutch.
