A natural consequence of aging and a full life is wrinkles — skin irregularities caused by loss of collagen in the skin, which in turn is caused mainly by sun damage and aging. Here are 11 ways to fight those annoying lines and wrinkles — so you can look as young as you feel!
Exfoliate the top layer of your skin.
This helps minimize fine lines by promoting the growth of new skin. You can use manual techniques such as scrubs or microdermabrasion, or chemicals, such as alpha-hydroxy acids (glycolic or lactic). Aim to exfoliate your skin at home at least twice a week, or every other day.
Apply Vitamin A.
Vitamin A derivatives, such as Retinol, Retin A and Tazorotene (Tazorac), can help exfoliate the skin and stimulate new collagen growth. Many over-the-counter products contain Retinol, and Retin A and Tazorac are available by prescription.
Hydrate and moisturize.
Adding moisture into your life in every way is important. Drink eight to 10 glasses of water per day and use good moisturizers. Coconut and olive oils make excellent skin hydrators, especially for aging skin. Try putting either on your face as a deep moisturizing mask and then take a shower.
Hydrate your skin not just with water, but with oils as well. Every day, take a supplement containing omega-3 fatty acids, which help keep skin cells strong and full of moisture and decrease the appearance of fine lines. On your skin, try using virgin coconut oil (found in most health food stores), which has been shown to keep the skin’s connective tissue strong and supple, therefore reducing wrinkles and sagging.
Prevent wrinkles with wrinkle-freezers.
Freeze current wrinkles and prevent future ones with Botox or Dysport. Both work by preventing muscle contractions, not only erasing the wrinkles you have now, but also preventing future ones from forming.
Protect your skin from the sun.
Sun damage is one of the main causes of wrinkles. Wear sunscreen every day (at least SPF 30), and add large-brimmed hats and large sunglasses to your wardrobe to protect the sides of your eyes.
