Fashion trend alert: Going sheer
Are you ready to exercise your sheer fashion genius? Sheer fabric, a trend that never really goes away, can make our flirty spring frocks hotter than hot. Is this trend wearable, for all of us? Yes, indeed, and we'll show you how.
Cheer for hints of sheer! How to wear it right:
"Cutouts can be found as small details on tops and dresses, usually at the neckline or bottom trim," says Marshalls and T.J.Maxx style expert, Sonya Consentini. (see right) Mixed with the many other details on pieces such as rosettes, beading and stones, cutouts add another fun element to shirts and dresses.
Sheer, light weight proportion
The sexiest cutouts are not extreme, but again, being used as small, feminine details. Tissue weight fabrics are often being used for cardigans and tops this season, which is why we are seeing the see-through, sheer look. "We've seen this as a trim, or on cardigans. Sheer blouses, tunics and even lightly woven cardigans are everywhere in spring fashion, adorned with lots of details, including rosettes, graumets, beading and stones," says Sonya.
The art of layering
"The lighter-weight fabrics will lead to layering of wardrobe pieces. For example, a lighter weight top with a shirt underneath and cardigan on top," Sonya says. Many tops also have sheer sections — such as this ModCloth Please Pleats Me Dress — to them as a detail, as opposed to the entire piece. Also, with eyelet and crochet being a key detail in fashion this season that leads to see-through and cut out, feminine based looks in many pieces.
Mix old with new, Sheer is versatile!
We're all about using trends to update our wardrobe, rather than replace it. Who can afford that? For example, a new feminine sheer blouse can be paired with a shirt underneath and a pair of denim for a shopping trip, or with a pencil skirt for an office look. A lightweight cardigan is great on top of a watercolor, strapless dress for day or night. A sheer tunic is a great piece to wear with a pair of denim or as a bathing suit cover up in the summer months.
"Sheer is so fun! It can be worn sexy and flirty or be tame and worn with layers. There are a variety of different looks to choose from. Finding one that fits your personal style should be no sweat. Don't forget, Sheer looks awesome with swimwear!" says Sonya. That makes this fashion trend a prime peice of fabric for spring and summer months.
