Summer is here -- time for beach parties, backyard barbecues and summer dates. If you are feeling a little less than fabulous, don't fret. All of us get caught in a beauty rut every once in a while. Re-energize your summer look with these beauty and style tips.

Get a haircut

Nothing can get you out of a beauty rut more quickly than a new haircut. When you step out of the salon, you'll feel like a whole new you. This summer, dare to go short with a chin-level modified bob, or even shorter with a pixie cut. If you can't take the plunge into short hair, experiment with color. Add sunny highlights or change your hair color altogether. This summer, all shades of red are trendy, and blonde is always big for these hot months.

Go for the bronze

If your skin is looking sallow or pale, don't bake yourself in the sun. Get your glow on this summer with a bronzer that's just two shades darker than your skin color, so that it will look natural. Apply it lightly to your forehead, chin, cheeks and nose. For the rest of your body, don't be tempted by tanning beds. Instead, use a sunless tanning lotion or head to the salon for a spray-on tan.

Grab a pair of shades

Find a big, bold oversized pair of sunglasses that you love and wear them often. You'll feel glamorous and confident. And if you feel good, you'll look good. Sunglasses come in all shapes and sizes. As a general rule, pick sunglasses that are the opposite shape of your face. For example, round faces look best with square or rectangular sunglasses. Follow our guide to pick the perfect summer shades.

Hello yellow

Yellow is the hottest color in fashion for 2009. If you find yourself always wearing neutrals, give yourself a sunny boost with yellow apparel or accessories. If a bright yellow dress is too much for you, pick up a neon yellow pair of sandals instead -- they'll look fabulous with all your summer whites. Gladiator sandals are still in, or try simple yellow patent slides.

Glam up with glitter

For those hot summer nights, put a little sparkle into your look with shimmery makeup. Shimmer cosmetics have tiny particles that reflect light to give your skin and lips a touch of sparkle. For evenings, take things a step further with glittery eyeshadow or eyeliner. Try Urban Decay Heavy Metal Glitter Eyeliner for a throwback to the 80s. You can apply a thin line for just a touch of glitter, or apply all over your lids for a dramatic look. It comes in 11 fabulous shades including bright blue, bold bronze and even black.
