Signs it's time for a style update
There's no need to constantly shop for new items of clothing, but you should ensure your wardrobe doesn't get stale. Not sure where you stand style-wise? We share some no-fail signs it's time to update the contents of your closet.
Putting together outfits feels like a chore
Getting dressed in the morning or before you go out can be frustrating at times, but by no means should you be in a state of panic every time you open your closet. If you are completely bored by the contents of your wardrobe or you dread putting together an outfit every single morning, it's time to think about updating what you own. Purge some of the items you haven't worn in three years or more, and replace them with pieces you love and that are versatile (meaning you can use them to create multiple outfits).
You can't remember your last clothing purchase
If your last memory of shopping for clothes is hazy or non-existent, you've been relying on your current stock of styles for way too long. There's no need to reboot your wardrobe with every new spate of seasonal trends, but going too long without injecting new life into your closet can make it tough to put together outfits you feel good wearing. Buy one new classic, well-made piece a year, be it a pencil skirt, blazer or great pair of jeans. Toss in one trend piece per season from a store like Zara or Mango, where you won't need to spend a lot to spice things up fashion-wise.
You're in a style rut
Do you yawn every time you open your closet? Getting into a style rut is easier than you think, but when it happens, it's best to do something about it, or you risk continued boredom with everything you own. The longer you remain in your rut, the harder it's going to be to get ready in the mornings, and the longer it's going to take you to decide on what to wear. Do yourself a favour, and go shopping. If you're trying to save money and don't want to spend, think about arranging a clothing swap with like-minded friends or scouting the local thrift stores for colourful accessories and unique items you can use to energize your wardrobe.
Your outfit rotation is continually shrinking
While you may have once had what felt like countless outfits, you're now dealing with so few options that you're worried about repeating outfits in the same week. If that sounds like you, it's definitely time for a major style update. The fewer options you have when it comes to putting outfits together, the more frustrating the task is going to feel — and it's only going to get worse if you don't do something about the state of your shrinking wardrobe. Make sure you have the following items to get you started, and then add trendier pieces as needed to supplement:
- Flattering pair of dark denim jeans
- Well-fitting blazer
- Tailored pair of trousers that can be dressed up or down
- Pencil skirt
- White button-down shirt
- Little black dress you feel great in
- One pair each of black pumps, ballet flats and flat knee-high boots
- One white and one black T-shirt
The times have changed — your clothes haven't
If you're still wearing most of the items that resided in your closet 15 years ago, an update is necessary. Some items never go out of style, but they do start to show their age, not to mention you might have gone up or down a size, and your clothing should reflect that. Everything you own should fit you properly, because if it doesn't, even an expensive item will look unflattering. Take a close look at what you have, and get rid of anything that shows its age, is damaged or no longer fits.
