Now that warmer weather is coming, chances are you’ll be showing a fair bit more skin. Make sure it’s protected and glowing with these simple tips.
Healthy skin isn’t all about what you apply to the surface. Give your outer layer the support it needs by starting on the inside. Researchers disagree on how much water a person needs to stay well hydrated — but the concensus is that you should be drinking at least four to eight glasses a day. It’s easy to get all the water you need: Simply drink a large glassful when you first wake up and do the same a couple of hours before you go to bed. Also aim to sip away at a cup or two of the cold stuff with every meal.
It’s also important to keep in mind that even though water hydrates when you drink it, water actually has the opposite effect when applied directly to the skin. The MayoClinic explains that frequent showering or bathing, especially in hot water, can break down the lipid barriers in your skin. Try to shower in warm water rather than hot and try not to shower more than you need to.
Fresh skin is healthy skin. Since our skin is constantly shedding and regenerating, it’s important that we get rid of the dead stuff so the fresh skin underneath can breathe. Use a gentle exfoliant, such as Clinique’s Turnaround Instant Facial, twice a week to give your face a healthy glow. And instead of constantly drying your skin out with harsh scrubs or soaps, simply drag a warm face cloth lightly over your whole body while you’re in the shower to gently take off any dead skin without dehydrating.
Don’t go a day without moisturizing this spring! With the dry winter months coming to an end you might think it’s OK to ease up on the moisturizer — but don’t! Nothing ruins your glam look like chapped, peeling skin. So make sure you slather on the lotion each morning and any time you get out of the shower.
A good rule for spring is never to leave home without sunscreen on. It doesn’t matter if it’s cloudy, or if you think you’ll only be out for a few minutes. Apply a facial moisturizer with SPF, such as Aveeno’s Positively Radiant Daily Moisturizer. And if it happens to be a nice-enough day that you’re showing some arm or leg, don’t be afraid to slap some on there, too, before you head out.
Spring offers up loads of fun accessories that also happen to keep your skin safe. A wide-brimmed hat is great for keeping your face hidden from the blazing rays, and sunglasses protect your eyes and keep you from squinting (which can lead to wrinkles). So with a few fun additions, you can look stylish and keep your skin safe from the sun this season!
