Oops… even celebrities get it wrong sometimes! We’re telling you why Ellie Goulding and Emma Watson’s GQ Men of the Year Awards fashions fell short in our weekly feature. Learn from the stars’ sartorial slip ups!
Anything can happen at the GQ Men of the Year Awards in London… just ask Ellie Goulding, who wore two different Julien Macdonald fall 2013 dresses to the event. This avian-inspired one was her first look of the evening, and we think this black and white dress is for the birds.
We don’t mind some feather detail here and there, but this is total overkill. The white plumage at the hemline and neckline is overwhelming. As if there’s not enough already happening on this feathered frock, there are also mirror embellishments in the middle. Speaking of a mirror, did Ellie forget to look in one before leaving her house?
The final verdict? She paired her mini dress with silver cutout shoes from Rupert Sanderson, which we’re also not feeling. When this dress went down the runway, they paired it with nude booties and we think you’ve gotta keep your footwear simple when you’re wearing such an over-the-top dress.
What was Emma Watson thinking when she stepped out to the same event in this strange getup? Crop tops are all the rage right now, but this white caped one she chose from Balenciaga’s Resort 2014 collection is pretty out there. Trying a caped piece or a crop top is a bold choice by itself, but wearing the two trends together just looks wrong to us.
We approve of pairing high-waisted pants with midriff tops so you’re not showing too much skin, but these baggy black ones remind us of MC Hammer! They’re also too long for the petite Harry Potter actress and bunching up around her shoes. She completed her look with peep toe black shoes, minimal makeup and no jewelry.
The final verdict? Emma’s certainly not a contender for best dressed in this odd ensemble, but she did go home a winner in another category: she scored GQ‘s Woman of the Year award. We figure the 23-year-old is still finding her own personal style, so hopefully she’ll do better next time.
