When it’s hot outside, you just want to stay cool and comfortable. For a backyard barbecue, it’s not impossible to dress comfy and casual and still look cute. Check out these suggestions for what to wear to a summer barbecue.
To the max
Maxi dresses are a cute choice for any summer event, so if you really want to wear a dress to a barbecue, make it a maxi. The MICHAEL Michael Kors print sleeveless maxi dress in pretty pink is created from a cool, comfy stretch-knit. It’s priced at $110 and comes in sizes from XS-XL.
Shorts are always a fabulous choice for summertime. But if it’s a little cooler in your neck of the woods, or the barbecue is going well into the evening, then put on a pair of capris instead. Bright cotton or white denim capris are both terrific options. We love the clean-front cotton capris in Raspberry Punch, available at Old Navy for under $28.
Skip the heels and wear your favorite flat sandals instead. Consider jeweled thong sandals or bright T-strap sandals. If you really hate flats and want some height, grab a pair of flatforms. With these shoes, the platform in the front is the same height as the wedge heel, so your foot remains flat. Check out the River Island raffia flatform sandals at ASOS, priced at $66.
If you are going to be taking a dip in the pool, make sure to have a cute cover up on hand. An oversized T-shirt isn’t going to cut it. We adore the Tommy Bahama Beach Blossoms hi-low tunic available at Zappos for only $98.
Made in the shade
For long stints in the sun, make sure you have a big floppy sunhat or at least a straw fedora. When it comes to sunglasses, grab a pair of oversized shades in fun colors or unique shapes. You’ll love the Miss Marc round oversized sunglasses priced at $98 at Bloomingdale’s.
A fun tote bag is the perfect accessory to finish off your outfit. Look for a tote with trendy colorblocking or pick a straw bucket tote to carry all your essentials. The Rafe New York ‘Kim’ straw tote is a wonderful choice and it’s on sale at Nordstrom for half price, now just $137.
No matter how much you love black, it has no place at a summer barbecue. Wear light or bright colors. Mint green is hot this summer, as is anything orange, yellow or turquoise. Nautical-inspired stripes are trendy as well as vibrant floral prints.
