The coziest scents of winter

Jan 10, 2012 at 5:30 p.m. ET

In winter we bundle up, break out the thick socks and the woolens, but what about fragrance? It’s the season to be cozy and fragrance falls into that category just as easily as your favorite fleece blanket. We’ve taken a look at some of the coziest scents -- the ones that wrap you in a cloud of warmth and comfort.

Woman applying perfume in winter

Elie Saab Le Parfum ($90)

This is the cashmere sweater of fragrances, created by one of the top perfumers working today, Francis Kurkdjian. Elie Saab wraps you up in soft spices thanks to patchouli, cedarwood, jasmine and a tiny touch of honey. This ladylike scent lasts well, isn't afraid to be a little bold and will take you to all your evening assignations.

Caron Parfum Sacre ($95)

A posh and elegant classic oriental fragrance, Parfum Sacre is rich, deep and dry with notes of rose, clove, pepper and myrrh with a touch of vanilla (but by no means the sweet kind). Although a bit old fashioned, it's one of those scents that envelops you and will linger on your sweater all through the day and into the winter night.

Bobbi Brown Bobbi's Party ($60)

This one was released for the holiday season but is by no means relegated only to that time of year. This softly spicy and floral scent of rose and sandalwood stays very close to the skin, so those who smell it have to be very close. Wear for snuggling by the fireside, when you want to be nuzzled.

Penhaligon's Malabah ($135)

UK fragrance house Penhaligon's brings us this sweetly spicy beauty redolent of long ago days in India. Earl Grey tea, ginger, nutmeg, cardamom, rose and orris, sweet amber, sandalwood and musk will warm a cold heart and hands and treat your nose to a journey without ever leaving the warmth of your house.

Heeley Cardinal ($150)

Cardinal is winter smoke in a bottle with its central note of frankincense absolute. Softer and lighter than you might expect but still all smoke. Other notes are incense, cistus, patchouli, amber and vetiver, but the frankincense of cold winters, ancient festivals and church services is the main player here.??

Chanel Coco ($85)

A truly timeless classic, brimming with warmth and spice. Blending coriander, mandarin orange, peach, jasmine and Bulgarian rose, mimosa, cloves, orange blossom, raised, amber, sandalwood and tonka bean, Coco is an unabashedly sexy and big fragrance. It's the little black dress of perfumes, and for winter, the fabulous fur coat over the black dress of fragrances.
