How to: Cat eye

Get the right tools

Get the right tools

For a classic look, use a felt-tipped black liquid liner. Or, for a more modern look, veteran celebrity make-up artist and beauty industry trend-setter Michelle Champagne recommends using a bold color, like electric blue. Kate Rose Cipriano, owner, principal makeup artist and fashion and beauty stylist for Touch of Blush, loves Lancome’s Artliner in Noir or Plum Glimmer.

Cipriano recommends setting up a lighted, hands-free magnifying mirror. “This will be your best friend in the process,” she said.

Next, Champagne suggests making sure your brows are perfectly shaped. Don’t forget to check for any stray hairs, too.

Keep it simple

Keep it simple

Remember to keep the rest of your makeup, especially around your eyes, clean and neutral. “Think Mad Men -- peaches and cream complexion with wing-tipped liner -- very retro!” Champagne said.

Start with a lid primer

Even out your lids with the help of a primer. “My personal favorite is Nars Eye Pro Primer. It helps set a clean canvas for the shadow and liner. Plus, it keeps the liner from smudging in the wee hours,” Champagne said.

Apply shadow

Apply shadow

“In the crease of the eye, apply a mid-toned neutral, matte shadow. Sweep back and forth like a windshield wiper, creating a crescent shape,” said Champagne.

Time to line

Time to line

First, apply a thin line of liquid liner across the root of your lash line. “Gently pull the skin taught for a cleaner line. Keep some fine-tipped cotton swabs nearby in case you need to clean up any mistakes,” Champagne said. Cipriano suggests keeping your initial line close to your lash line. “You can thicken up the line later,” she said.

Give it wings

Now that you have your basic line, Cipriano recommends dipping the liner applicator into the product, then retracing your original line from mid-way. “This time, as you near your eye’s outer corner, flick your wrist quickly towards your temple hairline to wing your outer corner.”

Clean it up

Look in the mirror with a relaxed face to make sure both eyes are even. “Use an angled eyeliner brush to clean up your line,” Cipriano said.

For added drama, Champagne recommends working in a dry black cake powder over the wet liner with a stiff, flat liner brush. “This will make your lashes look more voluminous.” She also suggests lining your upper waterline with a black eyeliner pencil to create a finished, dramatic eye.

Mascara time!

Mascara time!

Last but not least, Cipriano recommends completing your look with a liberal dose of black mascara. Voila! Rock your perfect cat eye at your holiday party, on a hot date or during your night out with the gals!
