If visions of Carrie Bradshaw's Sex and the City 2 vacation wardrobe are filling your head, you may need to think again. With many airlines charging pricey baggage fees, less is definitely more these days.
"The key to precise and successful packing is to take items that are easy to rotate and mix with other pieces, items that you can wear more than once, and, most importantly, items that can easily transition from day to night," explains stylist and wardrobe consultant Wemi Opakunle.
A pair of jeans, in denim or white, will take you far on your next getaway with the gals. Wemi opts for a pair of skinny jeans, explaining that they can be easily dressed up or down. To save space in your suitcase, she recommends rolling the jeans. "You can wear them as many times as you want to the beach or to dinner, paired with a statement necklace to spice up your look."
Image consultant Kate Leser recommends packing a crisp, white shirt for two reasons: You can wear it as both a beach cover-up and as a sight-seeing top. If you're looking to step it up a notch, fashion stylist Jennifer Margolin suggests a tunic, which can transition from daytime to evening with the help of white jeans and heels.
The right shoes can make or break your entire ensemble. That's why you can't go wrong with these vacation staples. Slip on a pair of chic flats for daytime activities, from wine tasting to shopping sprees. When the sun sets, opt for a sexy, strappy heel or wedge to dance the night away. Wemi also recommends throwing in a pair of embellished thong sandals to wear for all those in-between occasions, from the airport to the beach.
Tthe right accessories can turn your outfit from bland to fab in seconds. For example, a fun, brightly colored clutch will hold all your evening necessities while making a fashion statement at the same time. When it comes to jewelry, Jennifer recommends selecting a color theme, such as gold, and sticking with it so everything matches. Key pieces include a statement necklace, cocktail ring and stacked bangles. If you're heading to a sun-filled locale, don't forget a fashionable pair of sunglasses. Last but not least, Kate suggests packing a pashmina wrap (try a neutral color like black, white or cream) to keep you warm on cool evenings and on the airplane.
As Wemi points out, you can never go wrong with the LBD, or Little Black Dress. "If you want to be a little more playful, try a short and flirty summer dress with a flower or polka dot print. Pair it with a statement necklace, and you're good to go." If your destination is a little more low key, Kate recommends packing a simple strapless sundress that can take you from day to night easily.
