Girl power

Female relationships can be competitive and complex -- but they can also inspire and motivate you to achieve the impossible. Meet four women who understand the true meaning of girl power, and find out how you can improve your own friendships.

Dr. Lombardo shares her five top tips to improve your female relationships:

1. Be a good friend

Having good relationships requires both giving and taking. To grow strong, lasting friendships, it's important to be a good friend.

2. Keep in touch, be empathetic and be appreciative

Return phone calls and emails promptly; better yet, initiate those correspondences. Take note of meaningful events in your friends' lives and reach out when those occasions come around. Also, express appreciation for the love and support you receive.

3. Eliminate childish competitions

Be happy when your friends succeed. Comparisons and jealousy won't just turn off your friends -- they'll also make you feel worse about yourself. Celebrate accomplishments with them, and they'll share in your joys, too.

4. Let it go

Almost everyone has a loved one who's wronged her in some way; if you're human, you've most likely done something wrong to someone you love at least once, too. While you can't change the past, you can change the present and future. Forgive your friends and family to bring more happiness into your life and theirs.

5. Schedule fun time together

Life can be stressful, and you both need some fun times. Find out when the local comedy club is open or the newest chick flick is on; try a new restaurant together or take a fun class.
