Meet SheKnows HomeStretch mom Kelly. A middle school teacher with a 6-month-old son, she's looking for a way to redesign her loft area from a cluttered catch-all to a home office/playroom space where her son can play while she and her husband relax.
My husband Stephen and I got married on January 12, 2008. Ever since then, we have been on the go with no signs of stopping. We bought a house in Cave Creek in September 2008 and discovered I was pregnant with our first child in Jan of 2009. On October 1, 2009, our son Owen was born. He is our only child and we are spoiling him to death right now! Before our son was born, Stephen and I enjoyed playing in volleyball leagues, going bowling, going to drive in movies and hanging out with our family and friends. Clearly we are not big partiers or bar hoppers anymore; we got that out of our system in college! Stephen was studying (and received) his CPA and works for an accounting firm in the Valley and I was going to school for my Masters in education. We are now enjoying watching Owen grow and are too busy to do much else.
What room did you decide to redesign?
I chose to redo our loft/office area. It was one of those rooms we stuck furniture in that we did not have another place for. Right now, it's packed with a huge armoire and an L-shaped desk. We would occasionally venture in to do some work, but mostly it was a glorified storage area! We decided it was time to turn the room into a more cohesive space that could serve as both a play area and work. We're looking forward to having a room where Owen can play and we can get work done if we need, or where we can simply relax while he plays.
What's your favorite room in the house right now?
I love the open layout of our kitchen and living room because I can cook while Stephen plays with Owen on our couch. It is a nice open space where everyone gathers when they come to my house. I also love Owen's room because it is really cutely decorated. My husband worked very hard to give Owen a nice room and I am very appreciative of the work he did.
What kind of feel do you want your house to have?
I get a lot of my ideas for my home from my mother. She is very good at creating a welcoming space and I want our house to be the same. Stephen and I also have the same ideas for our dream home so I try to make our current home similar to what we dream about. We both love fall colors and the rustic look. Overall, I want my house to be a comfortable place for people to want to hang out in with a warm feel.
What's your advice for other moms who want to redo a room on a budget?
After completing my room, I see how easy and affordable it can be to spruce up any room. There are several consignment shops and places like Target and Marshal's Home Goods that have great deals on furniture and accessories. Adding pictures and accessories to any room in your house it will really make a difference and doesn't have to cost a lot. I say shop around for the best deals and the small things really do make a room complete.
