Watts To Play The People's Princess
Australian actress Naomi Watts is to play the role of Princess Diana in the forthcoming film of her life, Caught In Flight. Watts replaces American star Jessica Chastain, who was originally attached to the role.
Diana, Princess of Wales will be immortalised on film for the first time this year, because the final two years of her life are the subject of Oliver Hirschbiegel's new film, Caught In Flight. Although American actress Jessica Chastain was initially expected to play Diana, it has now been officially announced that Mulholland Drive star Naomi Watts will instead take on the challenge of representing Diana on the big screen. With Diana so fondly remembered by people around the world, the role will undoubtedly be a tough one for Watts, but also one that could win her great critical acclaim and public support if she does a good job. Naomi commented, "Princess Diana was loved across the world and I look forward to rising to the challenge of playing her on-screen." German director Hirschbiegel also has a difficult task as he has to decide how to portray the controversial events surrounding her death, which some conspiracy theorists believe could have been set up by the royal family. Naomi Watts could look to some of her Hollywood stars for inspiration on how to play a member of the royal family on film. Helen Mirren played the current British monarch to great acclaim in The Queen, while Colin Firth was an award winner when he took on the role of George VI in The King's Speech.
