College girl trying on clothes

money-saving shopping tips

How many times have you opened up your closet packed full of clothing, only to find yourself frustrated with nothing to wear? Don’t despair -- there are ways to get that star-studded celebrity closet you’ve always dreamed of.

Savvy Shopping Expert Leanna Gregor has the scoop on how to turn your closet from drab to celebrity-fab without paying retail prices.

Mag it up

First things first: Keep up with the latest fashions and keep track of what your favorite celebrities are wearing. Consider subscribing to print magazines, but whatever you do, don’t buy these at retail price. You can get an annual subscription online for almost the same cost of one issue at the newsstand. Simply purchasing online subscriptions from retailers like can get you up to 70 percent off the cover price.

Shop the sale

Designer web stores change their stock more frequently than third-party retailers. This means bigger sales! Go straight to the “Sales” tab right before the season ends to pick up discounted designer wear.

Get your coupon on

Even if you’re the richest billionaire alive, there’s no excuse for leaving free money behind. Although high-end retailers don’t flaunt their coupons, that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t be using them. Find coupon codes for retailers like Neiman Marcus, Bloomingdale’s, Macy’s, Bluefly and more on websites like, and

Click & compare

Comparing prices among retailers used to mean wasting time going from one store to another. Thanks to comparison shopping sites like,, and, you can compare retailers, brands and prices in just a few seconds, with just a few clicks.

Use discounted plastic

Purchase a discounted gift card through gift card exchange sites like, where you’ll find discounted gift cards for Bloomingdale’s (6 percent off), Steve Madden (10 percent off), Urban Outfitters (18 percent off), Neiman Marcus (5 percent off) and more. You could even exchange some of your leftover holiday gift cards to earn extra cash toward your next fashion purchase.

Be friends

To get the most exclusive deals from retailers, follow them on Facebook, Twitter and Pinterest. Retailers are known to do flash sales and giveaways to their loyal fans online. For example, Banana Republic recently offered their Facebook followers 40 percent off for the whole day, so there’s huge potential for you to save—just follow your favorite brands and check back often. For a broader choice of designer retailers and discounts, follow ShopSaveShare on Twitter and Facebook for regular updates on the best online deals.

Make some dough

Sites like and allow you to sell back the designer styles you no longer wear and buy new ones for cheap. This will help fill your wallet with cash and allow you to splurge on your next celebrity-inspired purchase.

Skip the schlep

Once you've covered your book or reached your desired height, it's time to make the outside. Starting at the bottom, even more carefully lay a Hogan strip of Hogan tape around your first wrapped one, shiny side out. Again overlapping about half an inch, keep going with these strips until you reach the cima.

I think this is a really great article. Who doesn't want a designer wardrobe? I find a ton of vintage/newer designer pieces in second hand stores woman's trash is another's treasure!

Sometimes having a ton of clothes can be a disadvantage. If you go through your clothes and honestly decide if you're ever really gonna wear that spangly corset again, and if you're not, try selling it! Resale stores are GREAT for clearing out your closet and then restocking it with awesome trendy looks.

Another great place to get designer items for less are sample sale websites. I actually saw an article on here not to long ago about that, you should link that up in this one...both great tips!
