Coat

Summer is here: Buy a coat

If you are looking to save money on your kids' winter clothes, coats and boots, the best time to shop is in May and June.

Let's face it, not many people are thinking about buying winter clothes right now -- so prices are dirt-cheap. Plus, stores are going to start getting ready for the fall inventory before you know it. So they'll want to clear out any sweaters, jackets, coats and boots left over from last winter.

Sign up for email alerts

Sign up for email alerts from your favorite department stores, boutiques and online shops to find out when winter apparel is going on sale. Many stores have "online only" sales, where you can snag stuff that you'd never find at the brick-and-mortar store.

Get out there

Unfortunately, not every deal is going to be found online, so you also have to get out there to scour the clearance racks. You can often find sensational steals if you are willing to search through every sales rack or buy "irregular" or slightly damaged garments. Broken zippers, tears near seams and other minor damage can be repaired very easily.

Ask somebody

Call or approach the store manager and ask specifically for what you need. Many times there's extra inventory in the back. So if you are looking for something specific, don't be afraid to speak up and ask.

Size up

Remember, kids grow fast -- especially when it comes to boots and shoes. Shop a couple sizes up from the sizes that they are wearing right now. When it comes to coats, bigger is better, since you want something that they can wear for a couple seasons.

I do this for myself too. You can save big if you shop for clothes out of season. I'm a big second-hand shopper, especially boutique second hand stores, and a lot of their out of season stuff is really discounted.

This is a very smart idea, especially for younger families. There is no sense in buying full retail clothes when your kids will grow out of them in a season. Great reminder to shop off-season, thanks!

This is very true. My mom always shopped out of season for us, and it was a great way to save money.

I did this when my kids were little. We saved a ton of money. Just don't forget to do the math! You may feel like you're buying gigantic clothes for your infant or child, but believe me, they grow into them!
