Top 5 trends in boys' clothes

No matter what colors or styles your son opts for, be sure to shop for clothes that can be mixed and matched easily to create multiple outfits for the season.

Hangin' tough

Perfect for the young rebel in your life! According to Julia Angel, founder of the blog Boys Be Cool, leather and motorcycle jackets are a must-have this season. Jessica Wiswall, president and CEO of My Vintage Baby, Inc., agrees. "The look is rough and tough, with distressed and raw edges, skulls, rock and roll motifs, studs and patches."

Lots of layers

Layers are a wise investment this fall. They're an ideal solution for an active boy on the go. Style expert and author Jené Luciana recommends clothes that move with boys and are school and age appropriate. "They need to be able to peel off or add layers, so try a thin tee with a rugby shirt over it and a thin down vest over cargos, with rugged boots or sneakers," Luciana said.

Skinny jeans are also an ideal layering basic. Angel says black and gray washes are the most popular. Luciana suggests pairing skinny jeans with a fun graphic tee, then layering with a multi-texture hoodie for added warmth.

Graphic tees

Graphic tees are growing in popularity for both boys and girls right now. They give kids the chance to express their personalities through funny phrases, symbols, designs and even favorite sports. Mom or Dad may need to step in here to make sure all tees are appropriate for school.

Military jackets & peacoats

Teens right now are obsessed with military and utility jackets. According to Luciana, pretty much anything with military detailing will grab a teen's attention. In addition, Angel points out that peacoats with brass buttons are a stylish and warm solution for fall.

Preppy cardigans

"Cardigans of all kinds, just like their grown-up counterparts, are flooding the stores," Angel said. Complete the look by pairing a cardi with a crisp pair of skinny jeans. Though most of the fall colors are fairly neutral, Angel says bursts of color such as burnt orange, chocolate brown and deep forest green are finding their ways into fall boys' collections. Look for a few cardigans with these pops of color. Talk about a dapper young man!
