Raising Rwanda

In an effort to combat extreme poverty in its many forms, SheKnows has joined forces with Food for the Hungry. We recently traveled to the remote village of Rwimbogo, Rwanda, and would like to extend a challenge to you — our readers — to take part in this monumental movement to help children and communities in need. We can't do this without you.

Children in Rwanda

"This was an opportunity to be a part of a philanthropic, international project and a huge blessing to represent SheKnows in helping some of the poorest — and hurting — children in the world," SheKnows video editor Ted Willis said.

Willis, along with a handful of other Arizona volunteers from Expedition Church, ventured to Africa to support Food for the Hungry in its wide efforts to empower self-sustainable and self-sufficient communities across the globe.

Beyond visiting Rwimbogo's elementary schools and churches, establishing relationships with its residents and building homes, Willis approached the situation with a unique service: a video camera and a desire to document the experience at hand.

The result is an incredible story of hope. Mere words cannot do justice to the lives it's already impacted and the journey ahead.

SheKnows began the partnership by sending over 75 backpacks with an assortment of school supplies, as an educated and informed youth is paramount to combating the shackles of poverty. But that is just a beginning. We can do so much more and aim to do just that.

To put it into perspective: 47 million youth in Africa are illiterate, and 32 million primary school–age children are not in school at all.

SheKnows would like to take you on a journey through the Rwimbogo experience, sharing with you the faces and lives of those in need. Our hope is that our committed community may contribute to the beautiful relationship and benefits of child sponsorship.
