We tend to associate celebrities with some pretty negative stereotypes: Vanity, indulgence, hedonism... In actuality, though, a good number of Hollywood stars are doing their parts to better the world. They're volunteering their time to good causes and donating money to support charities around the globe. Here are the top five most generous celebs, according to Parade magazine's annual list.

Oprah Winfrey

She's a famous talk show host and media mogul who has turned herself into the first female billionaire in the United States. On average, Oprah makes approximately $260 million per year, and her net worth totals at more than $1 billion. Last year, Oprah donated more than $50 million to various charities, including her own Oprah's Angel Network, which provides education, health care and advocacy for women and children worldwide.

Herb Alpert

Herb Alpert

This American musician is well known for his band, Herb Alpert's Tijuana Brass. A recording industry executive, he helped start A&M Records with Jerry Moss, which they've since sold. The 73-year-old bandleader gave $13 million to charity last year, including donations to his own music foundation.

Barbra Streisand

The singer gave away $11 million to causes concerned with environmental education and improvement, women's issues, civil rights and AIDS research. She donated money from a 2007 concert tour to education and other civic concerns and works to raise awareness of global warming, gun control and the war in Iraq. Additionally, her Streisand Foundation offers grants to organizations working on environmental issues, voter education, the protection of civil liberties and more.

Paul Newman

Paul Newman

After passing away in September 2008 from lung cancer complications, the Hollywood elite rallied 'round Newman and sang his praises, citing his generous charitable donations. Those celebs weren't wrong! Newman donated $10 million alone to Kenyon College in Gambier, Ohio.

Mel Gibson

The actor/director donated more than $9 million to the Holy Family Traditional Catholic Church in

Malibu, California, which he built. The church follows 16th-century Catholicism and sits on 11 acres of scenic land along Mulholland Drive. Gibson also paid $10 million in the past to reimburse hospitals for care given to seriously ill children who could not get treatment in their homelands. And in 2005, he donated $1 million to help Mexico recover from Hurricane Stan.

Other Hollywood elite who made the list include power couple Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, who provided more than $8 million to benefit New Orleans reconstruction efforts after Hurricane Katrina, as well as refugee aid and cross-cultural understanding. Cyclist Lance Armstrong, basketball extraordinaire Michael Jordan and hockey star Eric Lindros all tied for seventh place on the list. Each donated $5 million to their charities of choice.

Interesting list --- one exception, Mr. Pitt may donate to New Orleans but after they received $35 million from the state of Louisiana for their movie filmed there.
