White Loaf Bread

Homemade white bread.


  • 1 cup milk
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 2 1/2 teaspoons salt
  • 5 tablespoons shortening
  • 1 cup warm water
  • 2 packages dry yeast
  • 6 cups flour


  1. Dissolve the yeast in water. Scald the milk and stir in the salt, sugar and shortening. Allow to cool to lukewarm. Stir the yeast into the milk mixture. Beat in 3 cups of flour until smooth. Stir in additional flour.
  2. Turn onto a lightly floured board and knead until smooth and elastic. Place in a greased bowl and brush with shortening. Cover and allow to rise in a warm, draft-free area until doubled in size.
  3. Punch down and divide in half on a floured board. All to set for 15-20 minutes, then place in 9 inch loaf pans. Cover and allow to rise for 1 hour.
  4. Bake in a 400 degree Fahrenheit oven for 35-40 minutes.
