This White Cake From Scratch recipe is versatile.  Double it and bake in a 13 by 9 inch baking pan or fill lined muffin pans to make cupcakes.


  • 1 cup white sugar
  • 1/2 cup butter, softened
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1 1/2 cups flour
  • 1 3/4 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 cup milk


  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Grease and flour a 9 by 9 inch baking pan or line a muffin pan with paper liners.
  2. In a medium bowl, cream together the sugar and butter.
  3. Beat in the eggs, one at a time, then stir in the vanilla.
  4. Combine flour and baking powder, add to the creamed mixture and mix well. Stir in milk until batter is smooth.
  5. For cake: bake for 30 to 40 minutes or until golden brown and toothpick comes out clean. For cupcakes: bake 20 to 25 minutes.
