A traditional favorite, these sugar cookies are crunchy on the outside, but soft and chewy on the inside. For chocolate cookies, omit 1/2 cup flour and add 3/4 cup cocoa.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup butter
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 cup vegetable oil
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 5 cups flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking soda
  • 2 teaspoons cream of tartar
  • Dash of salt

Directions

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
  2. Combine butter and sugar.
  3. Add eggs, oil, salt and vanilla to mixture.
  4. Add flour and cream of tartar, mixing thoroughly.
  5. Form into balls and place on cookie sheet. Flatten each one with the back of a spoon, sprinkling a dash of sugar on top.
  6. Bake at 350 degrees for 10 minutes or until slightly brown on edges.
