This recipe stems back to 1930 where it is documented in the famous ‘Savoy Cocktail Book.’ One of the main variations to this version is the addition of Maraschino liqueur.


  • 2 ounces sweet vermouth
  • 1 ounce Rye or Bourbon
  • 1 bar-spoon Maraschino
  • 2 dashes Angostura bitters
  • Lemon slice to garnish


  1. Place all of the ingredients, except for the lemon slice, into a cocktail shaker filled with ice.
  2. Slowly stir the mixture for 30 seconds and then strain into a cocktail glass.
  3. Garnish the drink with the lemon slice and then serve immediately.
