This cocktail gets its name ‘Vieux Carré,’ meaning ‘the French Quarter,’ from the oldest and most famous neighborhood in New Orleans.


  • 3/4 ounces Cognac
  • 3/4 ounces rye
  • 3/4 ounces sweet vermouth
  • 1/4 ounces Benedictine
  • 1 dash Peychaud’s Bitters
  • 1 dash Angostura Bitters
  • Lemon zest to garnish


  1. Place all of the ingredients, except for the garnish, into a cocktail shaker and then fill with ice.
  2. Stir the mixture for 20 seconds to combine and then strain the mixture into a rocks glass filled with fresh ice. Garnish with the lemon zest and serve immediately.
