Sourdough Yogurt Bread

Plain yogurt added to Sourdough Yogurt Bread gives this tender bread a bit of  tang.


  • 2 tablespoons yeast
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 1-1/2 teaspoons salt
  • 1 tablespoon shortening
  • 1-1/2 cups plain yogurt
  • 5 to 7 cups flour
  • melted butter


  1. Dissolve yeast and sugar in 1/2 cup warm water in large bowl. Mix next 3 ingredients in bowl. Add to yeast mixture.
  2. Add enough flour gradually to make a stiff dough. Knead on lightly floured surface until smooth and elastic. Place dough in greased bowl, turning to grease surface.
  3. Let rise, covered, in warm place until doubled in bulk. Punch dough down and shape into loaves. Place in greased loaf pans, greasing tops of loaves. Let rise until doubled in bulk.
  4. Bake at 375 degrees F for 30 to 40 minutes. Brush tops with melted butter.
